Do I need to upgrade my doors or locks?

If your door has been replaced or upgraded since 2006, then it is possible that no further security upgrade is necessary.

The security standards of the door/lock fittings should ideally be checked with the installer.

You should ask the installer if the door has been manufactured in accordance with PAS 24. If the product has been manufactured to this standard, no further security upgrades are likely to be needed.

What is PAS 24:2016?

PAS 24 is a publicly available specification for enhanced security performance requirements for doorsets and windows in the UK. This standard covers doorsets and windows intended to offer a level of security suitable for dwellings and other buildings exposed to comparable risk.

Otherwise, if the door or lock is:

  • pre-2006
  • or does not meet any relevant standard
  • or Kitemarks cannot be seen on either cylinder or handle

If you are unsure about what is fitted to your door, contact a member of the Master Locksmith Association (MLA) and ask them to check for you.
