Core - Mandatory

The mandatory Core Modules is made up of six parts which include History, Standards & certification,Legislation, Handing, fixings & finishes, Sustainability and Commercial.

History

This unit explores the historical development of door hardware from ancient civilisations to the modern era, tracing its progression in response to advancements in materials, technology, and societal needs.

Learning outcomes:

  • Know the historical development of door hardware in ancient civilisations
  • Know the technological advancements in door hardware from wood-based systems to metalwork
  • Know the development and significance of door hardware in the medieval period, focusing on its functional security
  • Know the advancements in door hardware during the Renaissance, including formalisation of locksmithing as a profession, such as: technical innovations and artistic developments
  • Know the key advancements in door hardware during the Industrial Revolution, focusing on; the impact of mass production, material innovations and the development of patent locks
  • Know the evolution of door hardware in the modern era

 

Legislation

The unit aims to equip the learner with the knowledge required to understand the sources and application of the regulations relevant to the manufacture, supply and specification of construction products.

  • Understand current legislation relating building hardware products
  • Understand current legislation relating to construction activities
  • Know the current legislation related to fire in buildings
  • Understand the potential legal status of standards
  • Know certification schemes based on standards
  • Know the relationships between national and international standards bodies

 

Standards & certification

This unit aims to give the learner an understanding of the origin and the various purposes of Standards, together with an understanding of certification.

  • Understand the principles and types of standards
  • Understand the potential legal status of standards
  • Know certification schemes based on standards
  • Know the relationships between national and international standards bodies

 

Handing, fixings & finishes

This unit provides an overview of the importance of correct handing and the methods used to determine it. Learners will become familiar with common fixings used with door hardware. The unit also covers the specific fixings required for various door hardware products, ensuring proper installation and functionality. Additionally, learners will explore popular door hardware finishes, understanding their aesthetic and practical benefits.

  • Know the common fixings used in door hardware
  • Know the bolts used in door hardware
  • Know the fixings for different door hardware products

Sustainability

This unit gives learners the background knowledge to understand the principles of sustainability in building hardware products. It will highlight what that means for procurement and the impact on the disposal of hardware products. It also provides learners with the awareness of emerging trends and the impact they may have on the future of building hardware products.

  • Know the principles of sustainability in relation to the building hardware sector
  • Know the role of Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs)
  • Understand sustainable materials and products in building hardware
  • Know about UK legislation, standards and certifications for sustainability
  • Understand what is meant by the term Greenwashing
  • Understand new trends and innovations in sustainable building hardware

 

Commercial

The core module provides learners with a comprehensive understanding of the commercial landscape within the door hardware industry. It focuses on the roles of key players, pricing structures, supply chain processes and market dynamics, preparing learners to navigate the industry effectively from a business perspective.
